DEAR AMERICANS, IMMIGRANTS NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!

Sumaia Tarafdar. You might be wondering Who are Immigrants? What are they doing in the United States? Are they dangerous? What do they want? First of all, immigrants are international people who are moving from their country to the United States for a better lifestyle and more opportunities. As of 2018, the United States has about 327 million people. Out of 327 million people, 40 million people are immigrants. The United States is the highest immigrant population in the world. The immigration policies in the United States have been changing over the past few decades. As it shows on the bar graph immigration in the United States started around 1861 and after those people from different countries have been coming to the United States and settling here. The majority of people come legally while some come illegally. Immigrants in the United States don’t come to harm the Americans. They are just here for a better lifestyle. Some Americans believe that immigrants are dangerous and they are stealing their job opportunities. The truth of the matter is that Immigrants are not dangerous and they are not snatching anyone’s right. They might have a job that an American citizen doesn’t have because they qualify for it. The immigration topic has been the major topic of the presidential campaign. Immigration policies have been changing in the United States for the last few decades. When the government declares changes in the immigration policy it can affect immigrants emotionally and mentally. Immigrants get scared and they don’t know what to do. A lot of people feel safe in the United States. When immigrants come to America they want to fit in the American Culture. But the Americans keep their distance from them. As an immigrant, I encourage Americans to reach out to immigrants and talk to them. Instead of spreading hate show them that you care about them. If possible do something for them. My purpose for writing this newspaper is to let the immigrants know that their fellow immigrants care about them and there is awareness going for them and to the Americans to show care and support toward the immigrants and make them realize that immigrants are not harmful to them.

The Obstacles Me and My Family Faced in the United States As Immigrants.

Sumaia Tarafdar

Everyone has a story behind leaving their own country. I come from a well-known business family in Bangladesh. Back in Bangladesh, my dad was a businessman he had different varieties of businesses. In Bangladesh, my family was very rich. We had big houses, buildings, and so much land. One Day my dad thought it would be better if I and my siblings move to the United States. We had no economic difficulties so my dad could afford our Visa fees, tickets and rent a house in the United States.  My dad believed we will have a better environment and better education in the United States. My parents first came to the United States in 2009 my uncle applied for them, he came to the United States in the 1990s. My parents came to the United States for a few months and applied for me and my siblings because we were all under 18 years old. After my parents applied for us they, of course, went back to Bangladesh because my father had businesses and things didn’t run smoothly without him.

After like 3 years in 2012, my parents came back to the United States but this time with me and my 3 of my brothers they were all older than me. By that time my oldest brother was 17 years old so of course, he wasn’t legal to work. My dad had to bring money from Bangladesh for our food, rent, and clothing. He couldn’t work because if he worked he would have to leave the job every 2 months. He constantly had to go back to Bangladesh for his businesses. After we came to the United States we didn’t know very good English. Back in our country, we did go to international schools where they focused on English more than Bengali. Their education system is British English and American English is way different than British English. My brothers and I were admitted to the school. They didn’t face that many difficulties in school because they had other Bengalis in their classes also they were older than me so they went to school more than me and learned more. However, I had difficulties because I started in the middle of 6th grade and I didn’t understand anything because it was in the middle of the semester and the teachers weren’t going to go at the beginning of the semester just for me. I struggled for the first few months. Some teachers understood what I was going through so they gave me easy work and good grades. In school, it wasn’t that hard to survive. But outside of school, it was a whole different world out there. We had to go to doctors, shopping. We couldn’t explain or understand what the doctors would say. We also faced hate by some people. When we weren’t clear about certain things people would tell us: SPEAK ENGLISH”,  “IMMIGRANTS”, “GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY”. Things went like that for a few months and as time went on we started to understand things better. Now my brothers are about to finish college and have good jobs. One lesson I learned from that experience was that no matter who you are if you try for something you will get it and keep trying until you get it. I and my brothers wanted to fit in this culture and understand and speak good English so badly it took us time but we learned it.
